Use Financial Aid and Government Grants to Pay Off Debt - Apply Today!

With the national unemployment rate reaching double digits, a great many Americans are suffering from debt. Luckily, the federal government sets aside billions of dollars to give away to those that meet a certain set of criteria.

Most people call these cash awards "grants," but government institutions might not list these benefits as such. Many institutions refer to these programs as "discretionary assistance" or "domestic assistance." To find a grant that best suits your needs; you will be required to do a little bit of homework.

The first place to start looking is at Gov Grants. On this website is the ultimate list of all grants provided by the federal government. This catalogue lists the grant type and who is eligible. It also provides information and a detailed form to apply for any of the grants proposed. Unlike Social Security where funds are automatically distributed to those that qualify, grant programs require a very convincing formal application.

One feature that becomes abundantly clear is that there are currently no grants available to pay off credit cards and unsecured loans, but there are several programs that will help with mortgages/foreclosures, student loans, and medical bills.

Grants fall into 15 categories, 7 of which are financial. Formal grants are cash benefits allocated to the states in accordance with the law. Project grants refer to funding of a specific project for a fixed period of time. These include fellowships, scholarships, research grants, trainee ships, and construction grants.

"Direct Payments for Specified Use" is a cash benefit provided directly to individuals and private firms/institutions for the subsidy of a particular activity. "Direct Payments with Unrestricted Use" is financial assistance that has no restrictions on how the money is used.

Direct loans are loans that are provided by the government. These loans may or may not require a payment of interest. Guaranteed/insured loans are loans through private institutions that are "backed by the federal government" (i.e. the government will pay part or all of any of the defaulted loan to the lender). Insurance is financial assistance provided to money lenders to assure reimbursement for losses.

Government grants change often based upon the administration's priorities. It is recommended to check government web sites frequently to see if there are any new grants that match your circumstances.
